This morning I'm catching up on pawnshop news in the office before heading to Detroit for the Thanksgiving holiday. I certainly found one piece to be thankful for. A new pawnshop employee at cashNmore pawnshop in Texas recently left his job. In handcuffs. It appears that he started the holiday sale at the pawnshop a bit early. The deals were out the back door, not the front.

I was thinking in the office this morning that it's not uncommon for me to be contacted several times in a year by employers looking for references on former employees of mine. This is no surprise - I've been in some sort of business my entire adult life employing people. And mostly it's been a very pleasant experience. But of course - not always.

On November 1, most people in the US were given a gift. This gift was of such great value that it cannot be purchased anywhere at any price. It's something that people will tell you they never have enough of - however, when given more of it - they don't know what to do with it. And most people didn't even acknowledge receiving this gift. What did they receive?

Just a quick note today. For some reason this month I've received multiple inquiries from pawnbrokers asking me what the difference is between the Pawn Shop Advisor(tm) http://www.pawnshopadvisor.com/main.cfm coaching program and the Pawn Shop Performer(tm) http://www.pawnshopperformer.com/ coaching program.  In case you're wondering yourself, I've copied and pasted my reply below.

Today I returned to the office after three high-powered days of coaching in Phoenix. Talk about getting your battery charged - wow, what a weekend. There was tons of useful information shared at this meeting but today I would like to mention to you something that any pawn shop workers should realize, but few actually utilize.

If you feel that working in a pawn shop is nothing more than a job - well, quite frankly, you're cheating yourself. Experienced pawnshop workers who view their craft as a career are in high demand. Not only that, but there's so much more to learn by viewing your pawnshop employment as a career. The education never ends - and you get paid for it.

This past weekend I had the distinct pleasure to attend the Gridiron Greats http://www.gridirongreats.org/ Hall of Fame Induction Dinner in Detroit. This charitable event honored numerous retired NFL players who have done exceptional things both on and off the football field. Many of the players inducted had some pretty amazing career statistics.

I receive a lot of messages from pawn shop employees who are on this list or take the time to go to the Pawn Shop Performer(tm) website http://www.pawnshopperformer.com/pains.cfm to make a comment or ask me a question. I usually answer them privately. But every so often I receive a message that I feel I need to pass on to you and answer it in my e-mail to you. Not only is there something for you to learn by this - but many times examining someone else's thinking will help you improve your own.

Last weekend I was talking about you. No - not you personally - but I was talking a lot about pawn shop employees. I was in Alabama last weekend and I gave a seminar Monday morning at the Alabama Pawnbroker's Association meeting. And as I've known for many years, when you get around a bunch of pawn shop owners, there is one topic that is frequently discussed.

I receive lots of messages from pawn shop employees on the Pawn Shop Performer(tm) website http://www.pawnshopperformer.com/ and am always willing to offer advice for anyone working in a pawn shop. But last weekend I got a message that seems to have a common theme because I've been asked similar questions many times in the past. I feel you may benefit by my answer to this pawnbroker. This pawn shop manager writes:

Last week I warned those on my list for the Pawn Shop Advisor(tm) coaching program http://www.pawnshopadvisor.com/main.cfm about something that has taken a sudden increase in our industry. The increase has been so sharp in the past couple of months that I feel I should warn you too. After all, you are a pawnshop employee on the front lines every day.

I should really quit watching the network news. It would do wonders for my blood pressure. But sometimes I find a message in the media idiocy that also contains a strong message for you. On a local news show this morning they stated that a new study shows that texting while driving slows response time more and is more dangerous than driving drunk.
