I receive a lot of messages from pawn shop employees who are on this list or take the time to go to the Pawn Shop Performer(tm) website http://www.pawnshopperformer.com/pains.cfm to make a comment or ask me a question. I usually answer them privately. But every so often I receive a message that I feel I need to pass on to you and answer it in my e-mail to you. Not only is there something for you to learn by this - but many times examining someone else's thinking will help you improve your own.
A pawn shop employee sent me this message last night:
"Steve, I have worked in the pawn shop for five years and am considering your program but I have a question. We are very busy because of economy and this year my boss hired three new employees in the shop. Two from jewelry stores and one from rent to own. Even though I've been here longer, the new people make me feel like I'm not important here anymore. Really I feel like I'm back on the bottom rung of the ladder. Can your program help. Thank you."
Well - let me first say this. I understand how you feel, I have been on that bottom rung more than once in my life. At least if you fall it's easier to pick yourself back up. But here's what I want you to understand. The new employees at your pawn shop did not place you on that bottom rung of the ladder. You did. And only you can make the climb back up.

Do you really want job security at the pawn shop? If so - and I believe you do - why aren't you working on it right now? If you were, you would not feel like you're back on the bottom rung.

If you do so, your actions will follow. You tell me that your position in the pawn shop now lacks importance. This has nothing to do with the new employees and everything to do with you. If you want to be more important - make yourself so. Become the employee that your company cannot live without. Become the person that your customers can't live without.
Transform yourself into the person that your pawn shop, your boss, your coworkers, and your customers count on, and want to have around. Simply put - do everything in your power to make yourself more valuable in your position. The fact that you've been with the company for five years does not make you more valuable. Especially if you are doing exactly the same job you were doing five years ago. When first hired, you started out on the bottom rung of the ladder - but that certainly doesn't mean you stay there for five years. The choice is yours.
Working in a pawn shop puts you in an environment where you can grow and learn every day. You may not realize it - but you have a big advantage over anyone working in a retail or financial environment. Shouldn't you consider utilizing this advantage to your benefit? Of course you should. And if you're serious about benefiting from the position you find yourself in, this is when you should consider investing in the Pawn Shop Performer(tm) coaching program.
